Summary

Nuclear Energy Renewal Act of 2019

This bill directs the Department of Energy (DOE) to conduct research relating to the development of innovative nuclear reactor technologies that may offer improved safety, functionality, and affordability by enhancing existing nuclear technologies.

Specifically, the bill

  • expands the light water reactor sustainability program, which is focused on improving the economics, reliability, and safety of nuclear plants in order to maximize long-term operations;
  • directs DOE to work in coordination with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to develop certification and licensing criteria for advanced nuclear facilities; and
  • establishes specified programs of nuclear energy research, demonstration, and development.
