The SELF DRIVE Act aims to create regulations for automated driving systems (ADS) and vehicles to enhance road safety, mobility, and US automotive leadership. It establishes safety requirements for ADS-equipped vehicles, including defining safety standards, rigorous safety case requirements, and criteria for their design and performance. The bill also necessitates a National Automated Vehicle Safety Data Repository for crash data collection and reporting by manufacturers. It includes provisions for state management of vehicle laws, limited commercial operations for ADS-equipped vehicles, and temporary alterations for human driver performance during ADS engagement. Lastly, the Secretary of Commerce will review and provide a briefing on the security of connected vehicles.
